Project Simplify: The Bedroom

2011 March 13

I have everything but a dog and a pipe. Surely I'll survive.

The recent tragedies in Japan intensify my beliefs¬†that stuff just isn’t what life’s about. What good are these possessions if we don’t have security, love, health and happiness? My husband, Chad, bought me this lovely letterpress print that now hangs in our house as a constant reminder of what’s really important.

Last week I committed to Simple Mom’s Project Simplify Challenge, which proposes 5 weeks of purging extraneous stuff. This first week involved tackling the bedroom, so every evening Chad and/or I spent a bit of time picking away at the possessions we had accumulated. Though the bedroom really should be a sanctuary of relaxation, somehow it has always been the last priority when it comes to maintenance in our house. Sure, the laundry gets done, and the sheets get changed, but it’s always last to get any decor or organizational attention. Thus, we don’t enjoy going in there much. Let me tell you though, I’m already feeling liberated!

Want to see a few peeks into my world of bedroom befores and afters?

There are a few items that I won’t be giving away due to stains and holes; however, I have some plans to recycle them into new goodies. This project has motivated me to finally accomplish a few more projects that I had been putting off forever: creating a new ceiling light cover and sewing curtains to cover a few of the shelves.

If you’d like to follow along with this challenge, you’ll feel better for it. Do so here, and happy de-cluttering!

That is awesome. Doesn’t it feel great to declutter and get rid of the all the “stuff.” Once you get rid of that can start to focus on the really important things in life. Love it.

Thanks, Mike. Yes, waking up this morning was so much more enjoyable in a serene and orderly bedroom!

This Project Simplify is exactly what we need! I have taken many, many car loads to the Goodwill in recent weeks, decluttering our entire home, but we have a long way to go yet. Thanks for the inspiration!
