30 Days of Creativity: Day 2 – Homemade Deodorant

So, yeah, I made my own deodorant. Does this officially qualify me as a hippy? Back in January I mentioned a recipe I had stumbled upon that looked super easy and a good alternative to store-bought deodorant containing aluminum. I had some Tom’s to use up though, so I’m just now getting around to trying the recipe. You can make this in any container, but I figured I’d reuse the Tom’s dispenser; after peeling off the label and running it through the dishwasher, it was as good as new. The ingredients needed for this project are likely already in your kitchen cupboards.

  • coconut oil
  • baking soda
  • starch (such as arrowroot or cornstarch)
  • essential oil (optional)

I first whisked together 1/4 cup of cornstarch and 1/4 cup of baking soda. After melting 5 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave for 3o seconds, I poured it into the dry ingredients and whisked until smooth. Though the addition of scent is optional, I poured in a bit of Brambleberry’s Orange 10X essential oil for citrusy scent. (It’s lightly scented, but yeah, I’m going to smell like a creamsicle.)

After all ingredients were thoroughly mixed, I poured the mixture into my repurposed deodorant tube and chilled the container in the refrigerator until solid. Of course, I couldn’t leave it unlabeled, so that was a last-minute addition before placing it in the medicine cabinet.

Others who have used this recipe claim success. However, I haven’t smelled them in person, so we’ll find out soon enough!

    Sounds so easy and I like vanilla or lavender scents so it sounds fun to change it up. Let me know though with your “creamsicle” scent if you attract the Good Humor Man :-)

    Love your thoughts and creativity, seriously. This is on my do next list.

    FIY -tomato plants on the patio are doing good. Had 2 already and there are 5 more growing. Rosemary (hmmm…maybe THAT in the deodorant too) and Oregano are healthy too.

    Your recipe is full of healthy ingredients. You might want to melt your coconut oil in a double boiler though instead of the microwave. Coconut oil is awesome for you but once microwaved all the nutrition has been destroyed and all your left with is free radicals. Google the unhealthy effects of the microwave, you will be glad you did!

      Thanks for the tip, Lora! I have a double broiler, so that’s a simple alternative to the microwave. Will try that method next time.
